Wed 10th Aug - Dhanmondi, Whitehill

Slightly late - I was away - but the table is booked!  We'll return to Dhanmondi in Whitehill for our next meeting, on Wednesday 10th.  This was actually the last place we met before the pandemic, in February 2020, when we had a pretty strong turnout.  It will be good to return.

Aperitifs will be at the Woodlark, the pub/restaurant just 150 yards away on the other side of the A325 from about 19:00.  It's a Marstons pub and I'm interested to see what beers they'll have from their excellent range.

Dinner will be at 20:00.   There's a map below (if the technology works) or you can follow this Google Maps link for map and directions.  Parking is at the back of the restaurant.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you expect to be there, either using the feedback page of the web site or in answer to the meeting notice sent to members.  To make sure we have enough places, please respond as early as possible, ideally by 8 p.m. on Monday.  Looking forward to a great evening on 10th August - hope to see everyone who isn't on a sun-kissed beach!

Dhanmondi - Tue 21st February

The table is booked at last!  As we thought that restaurants would be full on Valentine's Night, we decided to postpone the February meeting to Tuesday 21st.

We're returning to Dhanmondi in Whitehill, our 12th visit to this venue.  It's often been our February choice since we first discovered it in 2006.   Thank you to the members that contacted me to why they'd heard nothing.  I planned to book on Sunday, missed the chance, then they were closed last night, so that's why this announcement is later than usual.

Aperitifs will be at the Woodlark, a Marstons pub just 150 yards away on the other side of the A325 from about 19:30.  I'm interested to see if they have a good range of the excellent Marstons bottled beers on sale - last time the choice was minimal.  Dinner will be at 20:30.   There's a map below or you can follow this Google Maps link for map and directions.  Parking is at the back of the restaurant.

Please let me know if you plan to be there, either using the feedback page on the web site or in reply to the MailChimp message which will be sent to members. Looking forward to a good evening on 21st!

Dhanmondi - 8th Jan

The table is booked!  We start 2014 with a visit to Dhanmondi, Whitehill, on Wednesday 8th January.  This is the earliest that a 'second Wednesday' can be, just three evenings after Twelfth Night marks the end of the Christmas season.  We last had a Curry Club evening so early in January in 2003, when 12 turned up to Paradise Balti.

The details: aperitifs at The Woodlark (a.k.a. the Two for One) just down the road from the restaurant from about 19:30, and then dinner will be at 20:30.

We had a great response to my request for replies for the December meeting, which meant that the restaurant was ready for us and able to fit everyone in.  Please let me know by e-mail or through the feedback page on our web site if you expect to be able to make this one.

And best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2014 to all our members and friends!

Dhanmondi - meeting report - 13th Feb

Our visit to Whitehill took place on a coolish February evening, but the welcome was warm and the food was hot.  Once again we had a great turnout, with at least one very interesting dish to excite the palate.

The main dishes included a house special murgh massala, podina gusht (lamb), and a chicken tikka massala to the chef's own recipe; maybe we'd had too many papadums, but the feedback from members on these was neutral rather than brilliant.   For me the highlight of the evening was the 'authentic naga chicken', a chilli dish which had a tremendous kick but no burning mouth after-effect. Quite remarkable, and for the chilli-mad amongst us, there were a couple of takeaway containers at the end of the evening.  It tasted very good for lunch the next day, with a little plain rice.

We enjoyed a very convivial evening, and decided that in March we'll go to Petersfield.  On 13th March, dinner will be at Paradise Balti and aperitifs will be at the Old Square Brewery.  A notice will be posted when the booking is made.

Dhanmondi - February 13th

The table is booked (actually, it has been for a couple of days). In February, our meeting is at Dhanmondi in Whitehill.  It's well known for a friendly welcome and great food, in the top 100 in the British Curry Awards in 2007, so we can look forward to a very enjoyable evening.  Aperitifs will be at 19:30 at the Woodlark, just a couple of hundred metres down the road, and then dinner will be at 20:30 as usual.

Beware taking your navigation from Google Maps - someone moved the Dhanmondi marker about a quarter of a mile down to a place called Pizza Time.  Maybe they couldn't take the heat.  I've requested it be moved back to the right place but this may take a little while.

Please respond to the meeting notice e-mail or let us know of your attendance through the feedback page on our web site.  Let's hope we'll have a good turnout again; January's was excellent, and the February meeting doesn't clash with Valentine's Day this year.

Malcolm's firm, Cargocall, is hosting the pre-match lunch at Petersfield Rugby Club on Saturday 9th Feb, 11:45-12:00 meet for 12:30. The main course: roast beef carved at table with all the trimmings - £20 a head. Followed by the first XV v New Milton at 14:15, then 6 Nations on (hopefully) the big screen.

El Presidente (Trevor) is coordinating numbers - if you want to come to the lunch, please say so on your response to the meeting notice, and if you've already booked, that would be good to know too.

Looking forward to a great February and a fine start to the Six Nations too - see you on the 9th and the 13th.

Dhanmondi - 14th March 2012

Good food, warm welcome, shame I've lost the notes.  But we had a good time and enjoyed ourselves...

March meeting - Dhanmondi, Whitehill - Wednesday 14th

The table is booked! The venue for March is Dhanmondi Tandoori, on the A325 Petersfield Road, in Whitehill. Aperitifs will be taken at the Woodlark from about 19:30, and dinner is booked for 20:30.

Dhanmondi was listed as one of the 100 top British restaurants in the 2007 British Curry Awards and they've always looked after us very well.

Please let me know either through the web site feedback page or by e-mail whether you expect to attend or not.

This Google Map takes you close to Dhanmondi, but someone has put the locator pin in the wrong place. It's actually on the corner of Stubbington Avenue, 100 yards or so north of the point shown.

Meeting report - Dhanmondi - 13 July 2011

Dhanmondi gave us a great welcome and an interesting and varied meal for our July meeting, which made up for a slightly low turnout.  Highlights included a very tasty mixed starter, and a fiery garlic chilli chicken dish where chilli and coriander had been ground together before cooking.  The murgh massala had really good-sized portions of meat, and we also enjoyed a lamb curry and balti chicken.  There was also a saag chicken, and a selection of chick-pea, dhal, rice and naan accompaniments.

As a little refresher afterwards, the kitchen gave us jelabi. This is something I haven't had in years,  and needed reminding how it's made: fast deep-fry a swirl of batter, and then dip the result in golden syrup.  The portions are then served up with a scoop of ice cream on the side.  Only for those with a sweet tooth.

One other Whitehill point to report: The Woodlark (Two for One) still didn't seem to have any of Marstons excellent range of bottled beers, but it did have the Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin ale on draft, presumably as a guest beer.  This is a very decent pint, which tastes far better on draft than out of a bottle.  Almost worth a visit in itself.

We decided that the August meeting (Wednesday 10th) will be at Malabon in Petersfield.  A notice will be sent out around the end of July.

July meeting - Dhanmondi, Whitehill

The table is booked!  We'll be going to Dhanmondi in Whitehill on Wednesday 13th July.  Aperitifs will be in the Woodlark, the Marston's pub just over the road, from about 19:30.  I wonder if they've found room for their wonderful range of bottled beers yet.  As usual, dinner is at 20:30.

Please let us know by e-mail or using the feedback form on our web site if you expect to attend (or not).

Petersfield Curry Club October meeting - Dhanmondi - Wed 13th

We return to Dhanmondi, Whitehill, for the October meeting, on Wednesday 13th. Malcolm will be the organiser on the evening.  Members - please advise if you expect to be there (or if not) so that we can give a good estimate of numbers.  This is a favourite, very friendly, good food, and we've had some great evenings there.

Aperitifs will be at The Woodlark, just over the road from the restaurant, from about 19:30.  This is a Marston's pub; while I've remarked before that it's a shame that they don't serve Marston's own excellent range of bottled beers, the draught offerings are pretty good.  Dinner will be at 20:30.

February meeting

The booking at Dhanmondi, Whitehill, for 13th January was cancelled as too few members had responded to the meeting notice. It's not surprising, due to recent road and weather conditions, that people are reluctant to commit. There may well be a gathering at Foggys followed by a curry at one of Petersfield's three Indian restaurants instead.

Instead, the February meeting will take place at Dhanmondi on Wednesday 10th Feb.

January meeting - Dhanmondi - Whitehill

The table is booked! We kick off the new decade with a visit to Whitehill and the friendly and enjoyable Dhanmondi restaurant on Wednesday 13th January. We liked it last year, and they're looking forward to our visit. The snow should have melted by then, and Petersfield should no longer feature in the national news - good reasons to enjoy a Curry Club evening.

For more details, see our previous reviews

Please let me know whether or not you expect to make it. I'll pass the details on to the organiser for the evening (I won't be able to be there). Have a good one!

Aperitifs at: The Woodlark from about 19:30 - or earlier at Foggys

Dinner at: Dhanmondi, Whitehill from 20:30
